Adolph Schlatter's
Application for US Citizenship
Here is a copy of my paternal grandfather's application for naturalization as
a US citizen. He was never naturalized. In the material I inherited
from my mother when she died in March 2007, I found a telegram from the federal
court stating that his citizenship application was cancelled due to his death.
He entered a lot of personal information on this application; I'll point out
the interesting parts.
Adolph Schlatter's citizenship application -- page 1.

On this page, he states:
-
He entered the US on 24 August 1890.
I located Ellis Island records that state he entered the US on 25 August
1890.
-
His wife -- my paternal grandmother -- Emma Waldner
was born in Bozen, Austria. I have another document stating that she
was born in Baden, Germany. Records from the Mormon Church ancestry
site indicate she was born in Baden, Germany.
-
Note his size -- 5" 1" tall, 125 pounds -- he
was a small man.

The interesting information on this page is what he has crossed
out. Adolph originally entered on the application information from his
1890 entry into the US. He crossed out that information and replaced it
with information about his 1910 entry with Emma. Note in the
crossed-out information he says in 1890 he was going to visit "John Sp???s,
63 Greenville St., New York." While I have no idea who this person is,
this gives me another thread to search to find more information about my
grandfather.

Important information on this page:
-
Date that Adolph and Emma Waldner were married:
25 September 1910.
-
Dates of birth of his three sons.
-
Names of two people he knew in Shaw, MS, well enough
to list them as references.
Another
document in my family history files is a travel document that Adolph
purchased from a Swiss travel agency for passage from Havre, France, to New
York, on the ship Bourgoyne, August 1890. Some of the information on that
document is the same as information on this citizenship application.

Schlatter page.
