Coon Family Cemetery
Wilkinson County, MS

You should have come to this page from my introductory page to my Coon/Kuhn ancestors.  If not, here's a link to that page.

In October 2010 my wife and I visited this cemetery.  We were accompanied by three distant relatives of mine:

  •  Jerome Wall. Jerome and I share the same great-great-grandparents, Robert Riley Richardson (1813-1874) and Mary E. Wells Hatfield (1820 – 1891).
    • They had ten children, two of whom were Edward Everett Richardson (1857 – 1925) and Reverdy Hunter Richardson (1864 – 1916).
    • These two brothers married Coon sisters – E.E.R. married Alice C. Coon and R.H.R. married Martha “Mattie” Coon.
    • E.E.R. had a daughter, Lee Richardson, who married ??? Wall.  They had several children and Jerome is the son of one of those.  He is grandson of ??? Wall and Lee Richardson; great-grandson of E.E. Richardson and Alice Coon; great-great-grandson of Robert Riley Richardson and Mary E. Wells Hatfield.
  •  Charles Clark; his mother was Helen Coon Clark, an aunt of my grandfather, Clarence J. Richardson, whose mother was Martha "Mattie" Coon.
  •  Mable Clark; Charles' wife.

Here's a photo of us at the cemetery:

L to R:  Jerome Wall; Joe Schlatter, Charles Clark, Mable Clark.  The cemetery is to the left of this photo.

UPDATE:  Charles "Sonny" Clark died in June 2013.

Here is a link to photos from the same cemetery that were made several years ago.  The individual making these photos used chalk or flour to make the lettering stand out.

A few months before I visited the cemetery in October 2010, Charles and Mable Clark paid two men to clean brush from this cemetery.  These two gents removed the headstones, took them to a carwash and washed them, then, re-set the stones on their original foundations.

The child, Richard H. Richardson, is a brother of my grandfather, Clarence J. Richardson ( 1896 - 1972 ).  I note that the child Richard was born in August 1900 and died on 6 December 1900.  His mother (my great-grandmother ) died six weeks later. 21 January 1901.  I wonder if her death was related to this child's birth?  Or, perhaps the two of them died from an illness.  They died in the winter -- Dec 1900, Jan 1901 -- possibly of flu or another cold-weather illness

Here are the separate headstones for Mattie Coon Richardson (my great-grandmother ) and her last child, Richard H. Richardson.

My mother told me several times that her father, my grandfather, Clarence J. Richardson, sometimes spoke of a member of his family who died in infancy.  She said Granddad referred to this child as "Little Willie."  The family history material in my mother's possession included a small piece of paper cut into the shape of a small child's hand with the name "Willie" written on the hand.  I have not found any child named "Willie" in my grandfather's family and I wonder if "Little Willie" is this child, Richard H. Richardson.  HOWEVER -- also written on the small hand is the notation "13 months" -- Richard H. Richardson died at age 4 months, thus, he probably is not "Little Willie."
