Pocket Watch Belonging to My Grandfather

Clarence J. Richardson

In early 2025 we moved from our home in Northumberland County, Virginia, to Manassas, Virginia, to be closer to our children and grandchildren as well as being closer to the medical care we both need in our 80's.

While cleaning out a box of old family records I discovered this old Elgin pocket watch that belonged to my maternal grandfather, Clarence J. Richardson (March 12, 1896 - February 13, 1972).  I had completely forgotten that I had this watch.  For as long as I can remember Granddad carried this watch in the watch pocket of any pair of trousers he was wearing; the chain was hooked through a belt loop.  He would pull the watch out of the watch pocket to check the time.

According to the company who restored the watch for me in May 2025, it is is an Elgin brand, 21-jewel, circa 1928, serial number 13699444.  It measures 1-3/4 inches in diameter and 3/8-inch thick.

I do not know when Granddad acquired this watch or whether he bought it or it was a gift.

I sent the watch to an online repair service, watchrepairsusa.com,  where it was taken completely apart, cleaned, re-assembled, and adjusted.  It now works and keeps perfect time.

Here are two more photos of the watch -- back side and close-up of the dial.
