Report of Sinking of
The Steamer Glide
January 1869
You should have come to this page from an article describing the death of one
of my ancestors, Robert Barnwell
Richardson. Actually, he is not a direct ancestor; instead, he
would be a distant uncle, brother of my great-grandfather Reverdy Hunter
Richardson.
Briefly:
- Robert Barnwell Richardson: born 1851; injured 12 January 1869 when
the "Steamer Glide," a Mississippi River steamboat, exploded; died 18
January 1869.
- His death was recorded in the Richardson Family Bible:
"Robert Barnwell Richardson Died on the 18th January 1869. He came to his
death by scalding from the explosion on the Stmr Glider. After living
one week in great bodily suffering which he bore with manly fortitude.
Oh! That this, the repetion of God's inscrutable providence may awaken
his surviving relatives to a greater sense of this mortal state of existence
and follow after the peace that we are encouraged to believe be found with
god. He died in his 19th year of age . (sic)"
-
My
research turned up this report of the explosion of the boiler on the
steamboat The Glide.
- His death is not recorded in
this document, which was prepared on 15 January 1869; he died three days
later.
