White Family Photos
-- Page 1 --

I inherited from my mother a few photos of the White family.

This photo was in my mother's possession at time of her death.  The left is the front side of the photo, the right is the back side.  Back of the photo is inscribed:  Uncle John White, Give this to Margie.

This photo probably is John H. White (b. 24 Jan 1862; d. unknown).  I base this conclusion on  the following:

  • The inscription on the back of this photo reads:  "Uncle John White, Give to Margie."

  • The inscription is in my grandmother's handwriting -- Annie Lee Dudding (Richardson), b. 1899; d. 1983.

  • Her mother is Nina Anna Statia White (Dudding), b. 1872; d. 1957.

  • Nina Anna Statia White had a brother named John H. White.  Thus, John H. White is my grandmother's uncle (because he is her mother's brother).

  • "Margie" is my grandmother's sister, Marjorie Dudding.  Thus, if this is a photo of my grandmother's uncle  -- as she states in her inscription -- then, Uncle John White is also "Margie"s uncle.

NOTE:  I have seen this same photo on Ancestry.com family trees identified as John A. White and the medal on his lapel identified as a Civil War medal.  I doubt it.  My grandmother clearly would have know her own uncle.  John H. White was born in 1862, my grandmother was born in 1899, when her uncle John would have been 37.  I do not know when he died, however, this photo is of a man who clearly is at least 50 years old, when my grandmother would have been 13.  Thus, it's likely that Uncle John White lived well into my grandmother's adulthood and she would have identified him in the photo.  This is NOT a photo of John A. White (b. 1836; d. 1910; a veteran of the Civil War).
