And More Photos

Lodge employee Keith Julian on Cliff Top. As of December
2005, we think Keith is an architect in Knoxville, TN.

Left to right: John Schlatter, David Wiley, Bill Shanks
(rear), Keith Julian. They are "gleeping" peaches -- which requires a bit
of explanation. For a long time, the standard dessert at the Lodge was
half a peach and two cookies. "Gleeping" involves swallowing a peach half,
whole. They are standing at the steps going into the back door of the
kitchen.
The following photos are of legendary individuals associated
with Mt. LeConte. I will develop more information on these folks and will
publish a separate article about each of them. Meanwhile, if you have
recollections of these folks, please e-mail
them to me.

Gracie McNicol. Gracie
went up LeConte 244
times -- 155 hikes, 89 horseback -- in spite of a broken back and two strokes. In the summer of 1969 she was in her 80's (??). There is a
book about her titled Gracie and the Mountain -- here's a link to the
publisher where you can purchase a copy.

Reverend
A. Rufus Morgan. Rufus was from North
Carolina. He made regular trips to LeConte. Born in 1885, Rufus
would have been 83 or 84 when this photo was taken in 1969.

I am not certain who this individual is. John tells me that Herrick
Brown called him "Cousin Joe." As John recalls, he was from South
Carolina, was around 90 years old, and was blind. He hiked with a friend,
maybe his doctor, keeping a hand on the friend's shoulder. Note Rev. Rufus
Morgan seated along the cabin wall in the background. It was happenstance
that these two gents were on LeConte at the same time.
